    Book Events!

    November 19, 2024 /

Had some wonderful book events this Fall! Started with the wonderful Writer’s Workshop at Page158 Books in Wake Forest. Terrific group of writers with facilitator, Suzanne Beaumont! I also picked up some new wonderful fiction and non-fiction books to read! Next, I was lucky enough to return to Page158 Books for an author talk with the very, talented author – Angela Anderson. What a dynamic lady! I love her book, The Power of I Am. It gets me started in the morning. Great to see my local friends show up and celebrate with me. In October, Teri M Brown, (https://www.terimbrown.com/) and I presented Feisty Deeds at the Southwestern Branch of…

Book Review: Looking for Jane by Heather Marshall

    March 1, 2024 /

Looking for Jane touched me in so many ways. Heather Marshall did a great job with this story of motherhood and everything that it entails. She introduces us to Angela Creighton, Dr. Evelyn Taylor, and Nancy Mitchell. Each of their story lines begin disconnected, but poignant in their own lives. In 2017, Angela and her wife are going through invitro, trying to have a baby. In 1960, Evelyn is an unwed teenager, sent to St. Agnes, to hid her baby from the world and give it up for adoption. In 1979, Nancy is a young adult meeting her cousin who plans to have an illegal abortion. All these women’s stories…

Do You Have a Favorite Genre?

    February 1, 2024 /

Find you read certain types of books? JAN 28, 2024 Some people read only one genre of story. They love romances or historical fiction and that is the one type of books they choose to read. Kind of how I used to read Nancy Drew when I was younger. Nothing could touch a Nancy Drew Mystery and I lived for every other Friday night. My parents would take my sister and I to “town,” I’d pick out the next book in the series, and buy it with my allowance. Of course, my mom took us to the library, too. But those books were just fillers until I got my hands…

Book Review: “Faye, Faraway” by Helen Fisher

    January 12, 2022 /

There are some books you are just meant to read at a certain time in your life. The pandemic has left me waiting, I realized today. Waiting to do so many things and this book helped me see that I shouldn’t wait any longer. Not that my head and heart had not been telling me the same thing for quite a while. Sometimes you need beautiful words written by someone else to figure it out. “Faye, Faraway” is more than a time travel book. I was skeptical at first about the whole idea of her falling through a cardboard box and falling back in time to meet herself as a…

    My Favorite Books of 2020

    December 31, 2020 /

I really didn’t get to read as much as I thought I would this year. With the pandemic, I started off in the Spring tearing into my TBR pile, consuming books right and left. That’s how I managed to get through the entire Outlander Series by May, while still managing to read the selections for my book club each month. I did read the best ARC that you don’t want to miss when it publishes in 2021 – The Rose Code by Kate Quinn! Sorry that I don’t have all the books for the picture, but I’ve lent some out to friends that I trust with my books. (Cue –…

Patty Pick for 8/9/18 is “The Couple Next Door” by Shari Lapena

The Couple Next Door is a fast read which will pull you in as it quickly twists and turns throughout the rest of the story. Anne and Marco, our young, married couple, have a new baby to love. Marco is the classic smart, hard-working boy who excelled and won the rich girl. He now has his own successful company and is trying to give Anne the life style she is used to. Patty Pick for 5/3/18 is “Are You Sleeping?” by Kathleen Barber

    May 3, 2018 /

“Are you sleeping” by Kathleen Barber is definitely a book you don’t want to miss! The book centers around two twin sisters whose father’s murder will change their every relationship. My book club had a lot of good discussion about this one! The book lays out the story via multiple points of view and from podcast texts. This makes the book very enjoyable to read.  The book centers around the murder of the twins, Josie & Lanie’s, father which took place in their teenage years and changed both of their lives forever. A young neighbor, Warren Cave, was convicted for the crime but everyone involved has a different memory of that…

Patty Pick for 03/15/18 is “Redemption Road” by John Hart

    March 12, 2018 /

John Hart became one of my favorite authors when I read his first book, “The King of Lies”. He had my attention and the fact that he is a North Carolina author kept my attention. I couldn’t wait to see if his next book lived up to the first, and it did. Now I cannot wait to read his new book, “The Hush” which came out February 27, 2018.  Recently I read “Redemption Road”. The story is centered around the two main characters, this time a woman and a man. Elizabeth Black, a police officer on the brink of losing her career and maybe her freedom is fighting for both…

The Last Ballad by Wiley Cash

    January 17, 2018 /

Earlier this year, I impatiently looked forward to the next novel by Wiley Cash. So you can imagine my excitement to hear that he would be the keynote speaker at the NC Writers Network 2017 Fall Conference. The fact that his next book would be published right before the conference made it even more of a reason not to miss his keynote address. I really enjoyed the conference, learned a lot, and met some amazing writers. I ordered “The Last Ballad” from my local bookstore, Page 158 Books in Wake Forest. We all need to support our local bookstores. They are so valuable and important to our communities. Wiley Cash…
